This painting, ‘The taking of Lone Pine’ by Fred Leist, shows
the attack on 6 August 1915 at 5.30 pm on the Turkish front-line trenches by
men of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Battalions, NSW. The Australians wore white calico
arm bands to clearly distinguish themselves from the Turks in the heat of battle.
In the painting the attackers have just reached the pine log head cover on the
Turkish front-line trenches. [AWM ART02931]
