This photograph shows a section of the captured Turkish Trenches at Lone Pine in August 1915. Seated and looking at the camera with what looks to be a trench periscope in his hands is Lance Corporal Leonard Keysor, 1st Battalion, AIF. Keysor was awarded the Victoria Cross for his bravery at Lone Pine on 7 August. The AWM caption states that this image shows 'three survivors after a bombing' and we must assume this means after a Turkish bombing attack so the photo was taken during the days of the Battle of Lone Pine 6-9 August. Keysor was awarded his VC for a remarkable demonstration of bomb throwing during which he caught Turkish bombs while still in the air and hurled them back. According to the AWM this image was lent to the museum by a 'Major C Jackson, 1st Battalion'. This is possibly Captain Clarence Jackson, who sailed with the 1st Battalion from Sydney in 1914 and who took his discharge from the AIF in England in 1917. [AWM A04013]
