- Artists' impression of the action during the Battle of Lone Pine, Gallipoli, on 9 August 1915 for which Private John Hamilton, 3rd Battalion, AIF, was awarded the Victoria Cross. Hamilton is depicted here in his role as a sharpshooter perched out in the open just beyond the Australian line with just a sandbag for cover. He maintained this position for nearly six hours sniping Turkish bombers who attempted to approach his battalion's position down a sap (small communication trench). During this time he also passed instructions back to the Australian line and the position of his left arm in this picture suggests that he is in the middle of some message. - This photograph shows Private John hamilton VC, 3rd Battalion, AIF, shaking hands with Lady Janetta Birdwood at the Anzac Club in London in late 1915. Lady Janetta was the wife of Englishman Lieutenant-General Sir William Birdwood who had commanded the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps during most of the Gallipoli campaign. Hamilton had been invalided to England from Gallipoli and was actually in hospital there when the award of the VC to him was first announced on October 16 1915. In late November 1915, Hamilton, along with Lieutenant Hugo Throssell, Captain Frederick Tubb and Lieutenant William Symons, all AIF VC awardees from Gallipoli, attended a reception at the Anzac Club, London, given by the Australian Natives Association. The principal official guest was the Australian High Commissioner to Great Britain and Ireland, Sir George Reid, ex-Prime Minister of Australia and well-known New South Wales Premier during the decade before Federation. During Reid's speech to the VCs he said:
No doubt ... your thoughts have often gone back in recent months and days to the generous sunshine of your native land. Loyalty and Liberty - Liberty and Loyalty - they have no prouder name than in that far-off continent, our fair Australian Commonwealth. [ The British-Australasian , London, 25 November 1915]
