An artist’s impression of the sinking of the Turkish battleship Messudiye on the morning of 13 December 1914 by the British submarine B11 under the command of Lieutenant Norman Holbrook. It is a rather fanciful image of the event for before, during and after his successful torpedo attack on the battleship Holbrook kept B11 submerged at periscope depth. As it was gradually sinking, however, the crew of the Messudiye spotted the B11’s periscope and fired fairly accurately in its direction. Fountains of water sprang up around the periscope and at times hid the sinking ship from view. The artist’s impression shows the Turkish shells falling around the submarine.
