Lieutenant Norman Holbrook photographed on board the Royal Navy depot ship HMS Adamant. This is British Admiralty official photograph supposedly taken in December 1914 by one of the Royal Navy’s photographers, Ernest Brooks. It is possible that the image was taken after Holbrook’s successful sinking of the Turkish battleship Messudiye when the B11 and its crew would have been the toast of the fleet. Brooks would have been keen to capture for posterity the young commander of the submarine in just this kind of pose beside the sort of torpedo which had destroyed the Turkish warship. [AWM G00453]
