The Nusret at Çanakkale Strait Commandery Military Museum, Çanakkale,
with Çimenlik Castle (Fort) in the background. The castle was built in
1452 to guard the Narrows by Ottoman Sultan Mehmet II, the year before he took
Constantinople and the remains of the old Byzantine Empire in the East were finally
swept away. Mehmet’s reign saw such success for the Ottoman Turks that
he was given the title ‘Fatih’ or Conqueror.
